1900 Diary

Mary Emma Lewis Martin Diary
1900

January 1 - All the family home until evening when Philip dressed up in his "Dress Suit" and went to Wheeling by appointment with Eugene Hildreth and they went calling.

January 8 - Lucien went to Pittsburgh so Philip could not leave today as expected - Lucien did not care to leave me alone at night.

January 9 - Phil left for New York State on a long trip. Lucien returned from Pittsburgh this evening.

January 10 - Sent Philip necktie for his birth-day by mail this morning. Also wrote him.

January 12 - Philip's birth-day. Spent at Canton, Ohio.

January 16 - Lucien and I left for NYC at 3:40 PM. Met Mrs. Dean that night on the train and all went East together. Bertie went to her sisters to stay until I return. No st. cars running today on account of Boilers sinking at the power house - Lucien was compelled to send up a carriage for me to take me to station in Moundsville. Closed up my room.

January 18 - Went to Fostoria office #66 West Broadway as I promised Lucien to come & go to lunch with him - as Mr. Rinehart was at office of course Lucien invited him and we went to Astor House. After lunch I was sent up to Mrs. Burdett's #155 West 49th St to invite her to dinner that evening as Lucien had invited her husband & son - we went to the "Arena" and had a fine dinner. Bought oyster forks this morning. Lucien bought two shirts for Phil & 2 for himself, also 2 dress shirts for himself.

January 19 - Bought challis for three waists at McCreery's. (1) Also, Lucien and I went to Domichan Bros (Turks) and bought 1 large Kharistan rug at $125.00 and 1 Bokara at $30.00, 1 Beloschistan at $20.00, 1 small Persian at $5.00 (a present of one "Anatolian" valued at $5.00) and a couch cover "Kelim" at $25.00. Took lunch at "Gilsey House". Lucien quite miserable with cold so we dined at "St Denis". Called at Mrs. Pattersons to see Mrs. Wilkins & Mrs. Patterson. Made a very pleasant call.

January 20 - Took a final farewell to the stores today. Dined at "St Denis" and took walk after. Left for Pittsburgh at 8 PM. Lucien telegraphed Phil at Buffalo to meet us in Pittsburgh on Sunday morning.

January 21 - Reached Pittsburgh 8 AM. Phil arrived soon after. So glad to see him. We all stopped at "The Heisey House". After dinner we went out to the Grahams. Mr. G left that evening for Chicago. We supped with the family & returned to the City about 9PM. Phil was fortunate in securing a room next to ours. Phil has bad cold.

January 22 - Mrs. Graham came in to the City & she and I went sight seeing. Took her to lunch with us. We left for home at 1PM and Phil left at 10PM for Buffalo. Lucien offered Philip the position out in factory that Mr. Brady had charge of as he wanted (Mr. Brady wanted Phil) Philip. So I think Phil decided to accept but will finish his trip & then take a little vacation East (NY City). Found Bertie home & the house all warm & opened ready for us - Had written her from the East to have things ready.

January 23 - Went direct to Hospital after breakfast, in Wheeling to see Ella as I heard just before coming home she had to have a serious operation performed. After reaching the Hospital was not allowed to see her but they thought she was improved & would "pull through". From there I went to Billy's and had the pleasure of seeing Mrs. Shinn & Tommy - they seemed hopeful & Mrs. Shinn left for Chicago at 3PM. About the same time Ella took a sinking spell and was not able to rally and her spirit took its flight at midnight. (11:40 PM)

January 24 - Went up to Wheeling to see if I could do something for Tommy but could not go to the Hospital as the Drs were holding a post-mortum but after lunch went up with Mary & Mrs. Travis to finish dressing the poor casket that remained. Tommy wanted to have the service at the Hospital as Ella had been educated in the building when it was the "Wheeling College", but, of course, they could not consent on account of the injurious effect on the other patients - so the body was taken to her Aunts on her mothers side, Mrs. Travis, and the services will take place on Friday. Did not get home until 9:00 PM.

January 25 - Decided not to go to Wheeling today. Ordered some roses and smilax sent down to Mrs. Travis.

January 26 - Mrs. Shinn of Russellville and grandchild, Edna Shinn arrived this morning to attend the services over poor Ella's body. Funeral took place at 2 PM. Very large attendance & beautiful flowers in abundance. Poor Tommy almost heartbroken as his last tie removed. He feels he has no one on Earth to live for now. Phil did not come home. Lucien came up immediately after dinner. Dr. Sooey officiated. Internment at Greenwood. From cemetery went to Billy's for supper.

January 27 - Went up to call on Mrs. Shinn and grandchild at Mrs. Travis' and invited them down to spend several days. Telephone message this evening saying Mrs. Shinn and Edna, also brother Tommy and Will Shinn will come tomorrow.

January 28 - Mrs. Shinn, her granddaughter, Miss Edna & brother Tommy came this evening in time for dinner. Fred Park and Patti came down after dinner and brought little David. Returned home before supper. Tommy also left early - poor "boy" he seems so restless. Will Shinn came in time for tea - had taken little Tom to Dr. Hupp's for an operation.

January 29 - Mrs. Shinn & mother & niece accompanied me to factory this morning & Mrs. S went to Wheeling for lunch. Turkish rugs from NY came today. We have decided that Edna plays beautifully & Lucien predicts a bright future for her.

January 30 - Will Shinn returned in time for dinner this evening. Little Tommy getting along nicely. Mrs. Bruce & Mrs. Brady up today to call. Lucien enjoys Miss Edna's music & thinks she has a great deal of natural ability. Too bad Phil is not here to meet her. Mr. Shinn went up to Wheeling this afternoon & left word for his mother to come up to brother Billy's tomorrow as they would expect him.

January 31 - Took Mrs. Shinn & Miss Edna up to brother Billy's this morning & remained with them until afternoon. Getting increasingly cold and afraid our friends will freeze at Billy's as they have the coldest house on record. I think little Tom still improving - The Shinn's will leave for home on Sat. Will visit at brothers until Friday & then return to Mrs. Travis.

Feb 1 - Intensely cold. Some pipes frozen last night.

Feb 2 - Still very cold but has modulated somewhat.

Feb 3 - Went up this morning to see and bid the Shinn family farewell. Took up two glass vases they saw made at factory. We found them delightful people & hope to meet them again. Mrs. Shinn takes with her, little Tom, to rear as her own (Poor Ella's child, who is now motherless).

Feb 5 - Lucien in Pittsburgh. Bought at Hornes 2 Turkish Rugs & 1 small rug. (One at $32.00 - 1 @ $27.00 & small one at $6.00)

Feb 6 - Lucien reached home 7:30 PM.

Feb 10 - Attended Industrial School at St Andrews Mission.

Feb 13 - Lucien left for New York at 7:00 PM. Bertie and I alone all night.

Feb 14 - Left home 3PM for Pittsburgh on a visit to Mrs. Graham. Bertie went to her sisters to stay until I return. Was met at Pittsburgh station by Mrs. Graham & son Will. Took the suburban train for their home about 6:10 PM. After dinner we all dressed and went to a party to which Mrs. G. & family were invited - she had asked for an invitation for me. Had a very pleasant time at the party at Mrs. Ebe's & I carried home a prize - Mrs. Graham 1st prize, I 2nd & Mr. Graham gentlemen's 2nd prize. Invited to another party on Sat evening at Mrs. Anderson's - Valentines Day.

Feb 15 - Annie Graham and I went in to town after breakfast. Exchanged one of the rugs (Turkish) that Lucien bought at Hornes. Lunched at Woman's Exchange & visited at the principal stores. Bought at Horne's store lace for night dress, cushion cover for Mary Lewis & 1 pr white kid gloves. Bought for Barry paper hatchet filled with candy & some cream chocolates. Philip met his father in New York today. In exchanging the rugs I selected another mossul at $32.00 and agreed to send back one at $27.00 & small one at $6.00.

Feb 16 - Mrs. Graham and I went in to the City after Lunch - visited Dry Goods & Furniture stores - returned home early so as to rest before going to the concert at "Carnegie Music Hall". Fine concert. Sat next to Mrs. G's brother, Mr. McConnell & daughter Bess. Snowing & very cold.

Feb 17 - Very deep snow. Mrs. Graham went to station with me at 8AM going via East Liverpool. Reached East Liverpool at 10:00 AM & walked up to Will's & Ed's store; found a very nice store & some pretty furniture. Ordered a chiffonnier for Phil's room, as he is coming home to stay. Was surprised to find brother Will there, so he and I came down to Wheeling together & I decided to stay all night with his family.

Feb 18 - Mary and I went to 4th St Church & Tommy accompanied me home & dined, also spent most of the afternoon. Returned to my own domicile after supper. Bertie came about 9:00 PM. Dr. Brady sick in bed with cold.

Feb 19 - Wall paper came this morning for Phil's room but no "paper hanger" as expected, so I went down to know the why and wherefore & Mr. Knight was afraid I would not get home. Selected plain pink for ceiling and figured pink for wall with pink and green molding to match. So Phil will have a decidedly "pink room".

Feb 20 - "Paper Hangers" came this morning & finished about 5PM. Lucien returning from N.Y. about Noon, sick, so I sent for Dr. Eugene Hildreth. He certainly has "LaGrippe" and the Dr thinks the same.

Feb 21 - Lucien in all day. Miss Holderby came up to receive some dictated letters, etc. Did not get through before noon so we had her for lunch. Cleaning Phil's room today. Took off his closet door and put up a Portman instead - green & gold curtains. His room is very pretty.

Feb 22 - Dewey Day! Phil got home - Lucien and I went to Loan Exhibition - Met Patti there & Tommy and all lunched together. Admiral Dewey came to the Loan whilst we were at lunch, looked in and saw us and smiled and bowed. In the afternoon went home with Pat and dined. After dinner Patti, J, Lucien & Mr. M went to banquet given by the "Sons of the Revolution". All disappointed by not seeing the Admiral there as he had accepted an invitation. Lucien & Mr. M. engaged Hack to take them over.

Warm and beautiful.

March 24 - Went to Wheeling to shop and after attended Industrial School. Phil home all evening. Man here to see Lucien about roofing & annoyed him very much by bringing business to our home after business hours. Cooler today but bright.

Philip had a very pleasant time at the reception last evening - given by Misses Dorrie Hubbard and Elizabeth Doddridge at the home of Miss H (Elizabeth Doddridge sister of Lieut D- who was with Dewey at the battle of Manilla). Minnie O'Brien & Charlie left Mrs. Brady's Friday afternoon. Painters here to put in the "Filler" on the hall floor. Came home early & brought new hat!.

April 5 - Heavy frost. Put down Hall carpet in upper hall. Mrs. Carruthers here calling this morning. Mrs. McMechem also called. Had to bring my callers through the kitchen & entertain them in my bed-room. Almost too cold for the crocuses to bloom abundantly. Hyacinths we are afraid of as the blooms are popping up out of the ground. Tulips also up & we are protecting them from the frosts as we had them covered & they are forced. Phil went to Wheeling & did not get home until 2AM.

Mrs. Smith came with Mrs. Brady & to stay all night as Mr. Brady is in Clarksburg.

April 11 - Crocuses still blooming but almost too cold for them. Covered the hyacinth & tulips again last night. This morning early raining & sleeting just a little. Bertie cleaning kitchen today. About through house cleaning. All went to Church this evening. After services Lucien rehearsed with the choir for Easter. Had lunch after we came home.

April 14 - Bright & sun shinning - the first for weeks it seems. Phil went to Wheeling on early car. I went to Wheeling 3PM & returned 6:30PM. Mr. Nagle sent me my new spring suit down on 9:30 car - had to dress up for Lucien and Phil. Very pretty tailor made suit. (Lucien bought the material in NY) Phil home all evening. Mr. & Mrs. Brady went up to St. Mathews to see and decorate - also unveil the memorial windows to her father & mother.

April 15 - Easter Sunday. Church very prettily decorated. Lucien sang in Choir. Phil and I communed together. Expected Mr. Hatch to dinner but he disappointed us & came 6PM. As Bertie was in Wheeling had to get supper. He returned at 8:30PM. Went over to the Brady's after he left. Phil drove home this evening. Beautiful day this has been. April 17 - Rained all day. We are stopping at Duquesne Hotel. Lucien attended two meetings today & did not get through until 6PM so we left at 9:45 for Washington City via RR. Lucien bought me two new pairs of shoes.

April 18 - Reached Washington City 7:30 AM in a pour down rain & it just seemed to continue all day. We went to Arlington though, I dressed in "rainy day skirt" & good shoes, so with an umbrella we sallied forth. Lucien smoked a cigar on the Arlington veranda and you would have thought we were rulers of all we surveyed. Took lunch at Harry's Oyster House. Left Washington by steamer "Norfolk" for "Old Point Comfort" at 6PM. Got a very nice state room. Took our dinner on the steamer.

April 19 - Arrived at Old Point Comfort in a rain - indeed it had rained every hour, moment & second since we left home. After breakfast went over to Fort Monroe - about five minutes walk from Hotel. The fort covers about 80 acres of ground and is the largest in the world. The walls which are of granite - rise to the height of 35ft; around the entire work, extends a moat 75 ft wide & 8 ft deep at high tide. Stopping at the Niagara Hotel & the entire place suggests repose as soon as landed. After dinner drove over to Camp Hampton - saw soldier's House, Indian Normal School (the largest in U.S.), Soldier's Cemetery, Old Church in which Pres. Tyler worshipped and over 250 years old (in this church the Indian students have put a memorial window to Pocahantas, also covered table in chancel. Saw Pres Tyler's house and many things of interest (St John's Church is the old church).

April 20 - After we returned yesterday from our drive took a steamer and went over to Willoughby's Beach passing the old fort called "Rip Rafs" just across from the Hotel. By RR we went to Lee Hall & engaged carriage & then drove to Yorkstown (8 miles) in a dining room steamer, we found it one of the quaintest of towns, 62 whites & 150 blacks. We saw the beautiful monument (cost 75,000) which commemorated the victorious event which secured American liberty. Also home of Gov Nelson, 2nd Gov of Virginia & one of the signers of the "Declaration of Independence" the home is just as it stood during that time. During the later Civil War this home was used as a Hospital. Cornwallis also slept in it before the Treaty of Peace was signed about 1780 or 1781. Fortifications of the Civil War are still standing. Town situated beautifully on York River.

April 21 - Returned to Old Point 1st night 7:00 PM very tired but very satisfied with our trip. Lucien's grandfather at the siege of Yorktown 1781. This morning we went to Norfolk by Steamer "Hampton" passed the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, reached our destination about 9:30. Saw some very quaint buildings also visited the market house and the old church "St. Pauls" a 200 year old building which has in one corner imbedded a cannon ball fired by the British during the Revolution. For lunch we took a train & went to Virginia Beach, an hour's ride from Norfolk. Lucien says the most beautiful beach he ever saw. Returned to Norfolk in time for a steamer to Old Point reaching there in time for dinner. Bought in Norfolk 2 forks and teaspoons. The waterfront one of the finest in the country.

April 22 - The first bright day. Sun out today. After breakfast went to boardwalk and saw the steamers coming and going also watched the training ship. Also stopped at Chamberlain Hotel and heard some delightful music. Walked over to the fort again after dinner & saw the old cannons from the War of the Revolution. At 4PM we left Old Point for good, taking train for Williamsburg where we arrived at 6PM. We walked all over town before supper with a young man who kindly offered to show us the sights. Went back to the Colonial Inn, quite weary but after supper we walked to the old Christ Church, hoping to attend services but was disappointed. Party of ladies here also.

April 23 - Four of the ladies in the other party left this morning. So with myself only three ladies at the "Colonial Inn". One of the ladies I find is Miss Mary Johnston, the writer & the other the cousin of Miss Johnston of Richmond. I met the ladies and her, found them delightful. Miss Mary Johnston very dainty and quite small. We visited the magazine for powder, called Cornwallis' "Powder Horn" but which stood before Cornwallis' time, it contained some objects of interest - gathered, but used in the Colonial days. Saw the pedestal and part of font in which Pocahontas was baptized. We called on President Tyler of the Wm & Mary's College - 2nd oldest in U.S. - found him very pleasant, friend & relative by marriage of the Bayliss family of Ky who insisted on our meeting him. Mr. Bayliss' mother was born in the old Palace which has been destroyed and grammar school erected on its site. The college was founded in 1662 by King William & Queen Mary (Oldest college in the country with the exception of Harvard) and endowed by them with 20,000 acres of land. First commencement exercises held in 1700. In 1788 George Washington was made Chancellor of the college. During the Civil War the buildings were used by the military as barracks & hospital. By an act of congress in 1893 $60,000 was granted the college for damages done during the war. We visited the oldest church called Christ's Church - 1st built in 1678 & enlarged in 1747. The oldest church in Virginia still used as a house of worship & in perfect repair. In the church yard are monuments & slabs upon which are rare & peculiar epitaphs. The old house occupied by Geo Washington - 1781 as his headquarters - also by Lafayette & afterward by Chancellor Wyeth, one of the signers of Dec of Ind. still stands & supposed to be haunted as Wyeth was poisoned by his nephew, who was his heir, but the uncle lived long enough to disinherit him. The Eastern Lunatic Asylum, a state institution is located here. The oldest of its kind in America founded in 1773. Williamsburg contains 15,000 inhabitants. Every spot of ground historical. Left Williamsburg for Richmond about 4PM. Reached our destination in time for dinner 6:30. Have been given a delightful room at the Jefferson Hotel - the finest one in the south and one that ranks with the Waldorf Astoria. (Miss Johnston was gathering material for a new book set in surrounding country, she and cousin drove over to Jamestown which is about obliterated except the ruins of the old church) We are very tired and will not go out this evening but retire early & prepare for tomorrow sight seeing. I have a very miserable cold caught at Williamsburg on a/c of the bed-clothes being chilled I think.

April 24 - We have visited every place of interest, an old church "St. Johns" built in 1740 & here on March 20 1775 Patrick Henry sang out "Give me Liberty or give me death". The capital square is beautiful, on the grounds are the state capital, new state library building, governor's mansion, old bell tower, the beautiful equestrian statue of Washington is in bronze - the horse balanced on two feet, statues of Clay & Stonewall Jackson. In the Rotunda of the Capitol a fine statue of Washington - Lafayette said "It is a facsimile of Washington's person". Gilbert Stuart (artist) said "The likeness par excellence". Rembrandt Peale, painter familiar with W. "That is the man, Sir, exactly". The only statue in existence made from life. The "Old Memorial Church" is interesting - on the spot right after Christmas 1811 the then Richmond Theatre burned during a performance & 72 persons lost their lives. On the front portico of the Church was built after the dreadful calamity is a monument of the event & bears the names of those who perished & whose remains rest beneath it. The house of Jefferson Davis is used as a "Confederate Museum". Hollywood cemetery is beautiful on account of the natural scenery. Saw Jefferson Davis' tomb, also his daughter's "Vivienne".
